INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ON MATHEMATICS "GUIDO STAMPACCHIA" 50th Workshop Optimization, Machine
PURPOSE OF THE COURSE
High-throughput technologies in the life-sciences, from sequencing to microarrays, continue to produce exponentially increasing amounts of data and drive the need and inspiration for the development of new methods in the computational sciences to efficiently manage and mine these data and provide a better understanding of life from the molecular to the population level. Bioinformatics, computational and systems biology, and the new -omics sciences, from genomics to metabolomics, all attempt to address these needs and better understand carbon-based computing, using silicon-based computing, with slightly different perspectives and emphases. Their success is intimately related to progress in mathematics and computer science, in particular in the areas of artificial intelligence, statistical machine learning, and optimization, in order to deal with very complex, high-dimensional, and noisy data.
The School is open to interested graduate students and researchers. The aim of the School is to introduce and expose the students to some of the contemporary problems and state-of-the-art solutions at the intersection of the life- and computational sciences. For this purpose, the School is organized into four themes, of approximately increasing spatial scale complexity: Chemoinformatics, Proteomics, Genomics, and Systems Biology. Each theme will be covered over a period of 1.5 days by lectures as well as invited talks, leaving also ample time for discussions. Additional minicourses to cover computational methods in machine learning and optimization will be given during the afternoons. The School can be taken for credit hours towards various PHD programs.
The registration fee for the School is 900 Euros and includes all local expenses from the evening of Wednesday September 8th to noon on Thursday September 16th. The fee includes all meals and on-site lodging in double-occupancy rooms, a special dinner event, and a one-day excursion. All lecturers and participants will be staying at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture (EMCSC) or in nearby hotels in Erice. Attendance is limited to 90 students. All applicants must complete a Registration Form available on the web site. Registration will remain open until March 30th, 2010, or until the program is full. A limited number of grants will be available under well motivated and documented requests. Transportation from Palermo or Trapani Airport (or train station) to the Erice Centre is included too provided one fills the pick-up-service form at least 10 days before your arrival in Palermo.
