BACKGROUND:
Nearly 250 scientists and staff members strive to combat global infectious disease each day at Seattle Biomedical Research Institute (SBRI). By combining science and imagination, it is our goal to conquer the diseases (such as malaria, HIV) that are responsible for the majority of deaths worldwide. SBRI (http://www.sbri.org) is an independent, non-profit research institute that is affiliated with the University of Washington.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
A Bioinformatics Systems Programmer position is available in the Global Health Biotechnology Center’s Bioinformatics Core facility at SBRI. We are building a core service for the Institute and are looking for a bioinformatician to serve as the expert statistician within the team. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide a framework for the statistical analysis of genomics data from a variety of projects within the institute and as part of world-wide collaborations. On-going projects cover a broad spectrum of topics, from the analysis of whole genomes to target selection for structural genomics.
REQUIREMENTS:
Experience in the statistical analysis of large genomic datasets is essential. Familiarity with systems biology data and tool integration platforms is highly desirable. An interest in data management systems, data mining and/or semantic web would be of advantage.
Required skills:
- Solid understanding of analytical techniques associated with whole genome sequences, microarray data or sequencing
- In-depth knowledge of public biological sequence databases
- Fluency with Perl and R
- Good programming skills in at least one OO language: Python, Ruby, Java, C#
- Experience with a mainstream RDBMS: PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL or SQL Server
The successful candidate will join a team of bioinformaticians and software engineers. We value highly the ability to react quickly to evolving requirements and implement creative solutions using existing open-source software.
LOCALE:
SBRI occupies a new research facility that is in a fast developing Biotechnology hub in the South Lake Union area of Seattle, Washington that is home to many research organizations on the forefront of life sciences research.
BENEFITS: If you are looking for an opportunity to make a difference, SBRI is the place for you. In addition to an exciting work environment, we also offer a competitive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, as well as life insurance, disability insurance, retirement, vacation and sick pay.
