BIOINFORMATICS Analyst II @ Institute for Genome Sciences--Baltimore, MD (US)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Institute for Genome Sciences in Baltimore, Maryland is currently seeking a Bioinformatics Analyst II. The selected candidate will contribute to genomic sequencing projects and scientific analysis of the data generated by next-generation high-throughput platforms by using a variety of bioinformatics techniques and software applications. The selected candidate will generate, assemble, annotate, and analyze genomic data, and prepare the data for further research or publication.

  • Following established procedures or specific scientific protocols, add value to genome sequencing projects through assembly, annotation, curation, and quality assurance. (Including, specifically, sequence data quality assurance and quality control, whole-genome and metagenomic sequence assembly, transcriptome and epigenomic data analysis, evaluation and implementation of new genomic data analysis pipelines)
  • Perform preliminary analysis of genomic data and format for use by other analysts or scientists
  • Integrate and analyze data from genome sequencing projects, functional genomics analysis, and other school of medicine research projects. This includes the development and maintenance of large-scale biological databases
  • Organize genomic data with other relevant data types into databases, displays, or graphic presentations for publication and web presentation
  • Participate in community outreach and training.


REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Life Sciences, including fields, i.e., Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or Bioinformatics, and
  • 3 to 5 years genomic research experience
  • 3 to 5 years experience with Windows and UNIX-based operating systems
  • Knowledge of relational database management systems, e.g., Sybase, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle
  • Solid knowledge of molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, and/or infectious disease research and their relationship to genomics
  • Demonstrated experience with genomic data QC/QA, assembly, annotation, or other analysis
  • Proficiency with SQL and relational database systems
  • Ability to refine and/or troubleshoot complex data analysis processes
  • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills and the ability to manage a variety of diverse tasks and shifting priorities
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to effectively interact with all levels of staff and external contacts


PREFERENCES:
  • Experience managing and manipulating large genomic data sets
  • Experience/proficiency with scripting languages, including Perl and Unix shell scripting; experience with bioinformatics applications such as BLAST, sequence assemblers, genome browsers; familiarity with databases such as NCBI, GO, KEGG; familiarity with high-throughput DNA sequencing and microarray platforms
